Book Editing Services for Authors

Professional Book Editing Services That Prepare Your Manuscript for the Real World

Your book might be the best thing you have ever written. But if readers find typos on page three, awkward sentences in chapter seven, and punctuation errors scattered throughout, they are not going to give you the benefit of the doubt. They are going to leave a one-star review.

That is not fair. It is also the reality of publishing in a competitive marketplace.

A professionally edited manuscript is not a luxury. It is the baseline expectation every reader brings to every book they open, whether they paid $2.99 or $29.99 for it. Readers cannot always explain why a book feels unprofessional, but they feel it immediately when the editing has been skipped or rushed.

At Carolina House Publishing, our editing service exists to make sure that never happens to your book. We work through your manuscript chapter by chapter, line by line, catching every error and cleaning up every rough patch so your writing can do what it was always meant to do: connect with readers and keep them turning pages.

What Our Book Editing Service Covers

Our editing process is thorough and methodical. We do not skim your manuscript or run it through an automated tool and call it done. Real editing takes real attention, and that is exactly what your book receives.

Every manuscript we edit goes through a complete line-level review. We check every sentence for grammatical accuracy, spelling errors, punctuation problems, and structural clarity. We look at how your chapters flow, whether your transitions make sense, and whether your sentences are doing the work they need to do. When something is unclear or confusing, we flag it. When a fix is straightforward, we make it.

We cover the following in every package:

Grammar and sentence structure throughout the entire manuscript. Spelling errors, typos, and commonly confused words. Punctuation including commas, semicolons, apostrophes, and quotation marks. Chapter-by-chapter structural review for flow and readability. Consistency checks for character names, place names, timeline details, and formatting patterns. Word choice review to catch repetitive phrasing and awkward constructions.

When we are done, you receive your edited manuscript in the format that works best for you. We can deliver a Word file with every change tracked so you can review and approve each correction individually. Or we can deliver a clean, fully corrected document as a Word file or Google Doc, ready for the next step in your publishing journey.

Why Authors Skip Editing and Why It Always Costs Them

Most authors who skip professional editing do it for one of three reasons. They believe their own proofreading is sufficient. They think editing is too expensive. Or they are simply eager to publish and do not want to slow down.

All three of those reasons make sense on the surface. And all three of them end up costing far more than the editing service ever would have.

A single round of negative reviews citing poor editing can permanently damage a book’s sales trajectory on Amazon. Readers remember. Algorithms take notice. And once a book collects a reputation for sloppy writing, reversing that perception is incredibly difficult even if you upload a corrected version later.

The investment in professional editing is not a cost. It is protection for everything else you have put into your book: the time spent writing it, the money spent on cover design and formatting, and the energy you will spend marketing it. Getting the editing right means all of that other work has a solid foundation to stand on.

Our Book Editing Packages

Who This Service Is Built For

Our editing service is a strong fit for first-time authors who want to make sure their debut book earns the respect it deserves. It is equally valuable for experienced authors who understand that self-editing has real limits, no matter how skilled the writer.

We work with fiction authors writing in every genre, non-fiction authors producing business books, self-help titles, and guides, and memoir writers whose personal stories deserve to be told as powerfully as possible.

If you are preparing a manuscript for self-publishing on Amazon KDP, submitting to literary agents, or publishing through Carolina House as a signed author, professional editing belongs in your process. Every path to readers runs through a polished manuscript.

Need a Custom Quote?

Not every manuscript fits neatly into a word count package. If your project runs longer than 150,000 words, involves an unusual format, or has specific editing needs that fall outside what is described above, we are glad to put together a custom quote for you.

Reach out and tell us what you are working on. We will find a solution that fits your manuscript and your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Book Editing Services

What is the difference between line editing and developmental editing?

Line editing focuses on the sentence-level quality of your writing: grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice, and structural flow within your chapters. It is about making sure your writing is clean, clear, and professional. Developmental editing looks at the bigger picture, including your book’s overall structure, pacing, character arcs, argument progression in non-fiction, and whether the book is achieving what it set out to do. Our standard editing packages cover line editing. Our Gold Package adds the Author Manuscript Review, which covers the developmental side of the conversation.

How long does the editing process take?

Turnaround time depends on the length and complexity of your manuscript. Shorter manuscripts in the Bronze Package range are typically completed within 7 to 10 business days. Longer manuscripts at the Silver and Gold level generally take 14 to 21 business days. If you have a specific deadline, mention it when you order and we will do our best to accommodate your timeline.

Will the editing change my voice or style?

No. Good editing preserves your voice while removing the errors and rough patches that get in its way. Our job is to make your writing sound like the best version of you, not like someone else. We correct mistakes and improve clarity without rewriting your story or flattening your personality on the page. Your book will still sound like yours when we are done.

Do I need to format my manuscript before submitting it?

A basic standard manuscript format is helpful but not required. Standard format means double-spaced text, a common font like Times New Roman or Courier at 12-point size, and consistent chapter breaks. If your manuscript is not formatted that way, do not let it stop you from reaching out. We can work with most document formats and will let you know if we need anything adjusted before we begin.

What file types do you accept?

We accept Microsoft Word documents (.doc and .docx) and Google Docs. If your manuscript is in a different format such as a PDF or Pages file, please contact us before ordering and we will advise you on the best way to proceed.

Can I see the changes you made or do you just send me a clean file?

You choose. We can deliver your edited manuscript as a tracked-changes Word document where every correction is marked and you can accept or reject each change individually. Or we can send you a clean finished document with all corrections already applied. Some authors prefer to review every edit, while others just want the polished result. We accommodate both approaches.

Does your editing service include book formatting?

No. Editing and formatting are separate services. Editing addresses the content of your manuscript: the words, sentences, grammar, and structure. Formatting addresses the visual layout of your book for print and digital publishing: fonts, margins, chapter headings, page numbers, and how it looks when a reader opens it. After your editing is complete, you can add our Book Formatting service to get your manuscript fully prepared for publication.

What happens if I am not satisfied with the editing?

We stand behind our work. If you review your edited manuscript and feel that something was missed or handled incorrectly, contact us right away with the specific concern. We will review the issue and work with you to make it right. Our goal is a manuscript you are confident in, and we take that seriously.

Is editing really worth the cost for a self-published book?

Without question. Self-published books compete directly with traditionally published titles in every category on Amazon and every other retail platform. Readers do not grade on a curve for self-published authors. They expect the same level of quality they get from any other book. A single wave of reviews citing poor editing can bury a book’s sales for good. The cost of professional editing is small compared to the long-term damage that skipping it can cause. It is one of the smartest investments you can make in your book’s commercial life.

Can I bundle editing with other services?

Yes. Our Gold Package already bundles editing with the Author Manuscript Review at a significant discount compared to purchasing them separately. If you also need cover design or book formatting, reach out and ask about bundling options. We are happy to put together a package that covers everything your manuscript needs in a single order.

Do you edit both fiction and non-fiction books?

Yes. We edit across all genres and categories. Fiction, non-fiction, memoir, self-help, business, spirituality, children’s books, and more. The core editing principles are the same regardless of genre: clear writing, correct grammar, smooth flow, and a manuscript that holds the reader’s attention. If you are unsure whether your project is a good fit, contact us and we will give you a straight answer.

Your Book Deserves to Be Read. Make Sure It Is Ready.

You have put real time and real effort into writing your book. Do not let avoidable errors stand between your work and the readers it was written for. A professionally edited manuscript does not just look better. It performs better in reviews, in sales, and in the lasting impression it leaves on every reader who opens it.

Choose the package that fits your manuscript, place your order, and let us take it from there. Your book is closer to ready than you think. We will help you get it the rest of the way there.

Need Something Different?

If your project falls outside the scope of these three packages, we are happy to put together a custom quote. Longer manuscripts, unusual formats, or specialized needs are all welcome. Just reach out and tell us what you are working on, and we will find a solution that fits.
